Why Check-Ups & Cleanings?
Why Get Dental Check-Up and Cleanings?
Because, to quote George Orwell, sometimes “to see what is in front of one’s nose requires a constant struggle.”
Specifically, for various reasons, it is easy to overlook the fact that oral health is a part of the overall health of the body. We aim to increase your awareness of your dental health, not to make you feel guilty or afraid. We often tell patients to remember that the same blood that flows through their veins and heart irrigates the gums and soft tissues of the mouth. They are unequivocally interconnected. For children, we use another analogy to motivate: “Imagine a clean house. If one room is filthy and you walk around the house, eventually the dirt of that one room will spread in the rest of the house. Your mouth can be a clean room or a dirty one”.
Preventative dentistry reduces the possibility of trauma, saves time and money, and in the long run can make a big difference in overall health, occasionally even lifesaving. Although we acknowledge that people can avoid dental care for a variety of reasons from apprehension to financial concerns, far too often we see patients that have serious general health problems that need urgent medical treatment (radiation, chemotherapy, chronic long term use of blood thinners, etc) where a dental treatment that could have been done safely and conservatively otherwise, becomes an urgent series of extractions due to the emergency of the medical treatment.
In other words: “neglect your teeth and they might come back to bite you”.
